African players in Germany’s Bundesliga

The German Bundesliga just kicked-off after the winter-break. The transfer-window shut-down end of January, so the GIC Africa has a look at African players in Germany’s top flight.

A total of 54 players with a citizenship of an African country are contracted to 16 of the 18 Bundesliga teams. Here you will find short introductions to some of the top players, up and coming stars and players who opted to play for Germany.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang:

The Gabonese striker is probably the most popular Bundesliga player at this time. The 27 year-old signed with Borussia Dortmund in 2013. In a total of 114 matches he scored 71 goals. In 2015, Aubameyang was named African Footballer of the year. He represented Gabon 48 times (19 goals).

Salomon Kalou:

Ivorian Salomon Kalou signed with Hertha Berlin in 2014. In a total of 71 matches he scored 25 goals. Recently, the 31 year-old striker has taken part in his sixth AFCON. He represented the Ivory Coast 90 times (28 goals).

Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting:

The Cameroonian missed out on winning this year’s AFCON title with his fellow team-mates due to unavailability for selection. Since 2014 the 27 year-old striker plays for Schalke 04. In 75 matches he scored 18 goals. For Cameroon he appeared 43 times (13 goals).

Future stars

The 22 year-old Keïta got signed by RB Leipzig in 2016. In a total of 18 matches he scored four goals. For Guinea he appeared 18 times (two goals). The statistics portal whoscored.com ranked him as the best under-21 player of the running season.

Victor Osimhen:

Osimhen got signed by Wolfsburg in 2017. In 2015, he was the top scorer of the Under-17 World Cup in Chile. The 18 year-old striker could have been transferred to FC Arsenal, too. “But Wolfsburg is the best place for me to start my career,” he said in an interview with German sports magazine kicker.

Dual Citizens

Twenty players are holding a German citizenship in addition to their African one. Here are two who already earned caps for the German national team Die Mannschaft.

German-Ivorian Jonathan Tah plays for Bayer Leverkusen since 2015. In a total of 45 matches he scored one goal. For Germany the 21 year-old defender has taken the field three times.

Serge Gnabry:

The German-Ivorian got signed by Werder Bremen in 2016. In a total of 19 matches he scored seven goals. The 21-year old played twice for the German National Team, scoring three times.
