Six decades of the current democratic German government structure has cultivated an active and engaged citizenry. In 2009, the nation celebrated the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Federal German Republic and in 2010, the twentieth anniversary of reunification. At all levels of German society there is an understanding of both individual and collective responsibility in the actions that are taken. Whether in local environmental projects, national elections or participation in international agreements and organizations, people and politics are closely bound. The diverse population in Germany provides incredible vigour to this dynamism.
