Helmut Kohl was German Chancellor for 16 years. The mathematician Gisèle Mophou from the Université des Antilles was appointed to the German Research Chair for Mathematics and its Applications at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Limbe, Cameroon. As the first female researcher to be awarded with a German Research Chair at an AIMS centre, Mophou would strengthen university education and research in mathematics in Africa.
